What is the European Accessibility Act and how does it affect ecommerce businesses?

Ecommerce companies with 10+ employees and €2M+ revenue must make websites/apps accessible under the European Accessibility Act.

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) officially took effect on June 28, 2025. It applies to companies with over 10 employees and annual revenue above €2 million, requiring them to make both their websites and mobile apps accessible to people with disabilities. Importantly, the Act is a directive, not a regulation, which means each EU member state is responsible for transposing it into their own legal framework. This also means that fines, enforcement bodies, and complaint procedures will vary from country to country.

Scope of Compliance includes Websites and Mobile Apps: Both must meet accessibility requirements (likely aligned with WCAG 2.1 AA standards).
